E-book Giveaway: Childhood Favorites

Hello there! Which of these three lovely e-books would you like to win? All three of these are childhood favorites of mine.

Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski
I remember reading Strawberry Girl with my mother in early elementary school, and loving it! The funny thing is, I don't remember anything about the book. I just remember that I loved it. I'd enter to win this one just so I could refresh my memory (and so I could read it aloud to my kids when they got to elementary school)!

Apparently, it is the story of Birdie and her family on the Florida frontier. They are trying to start a strawberry farm despite droughts, cold snaps and dastardly neighbors. It won the Newbery medal.

Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater
I read this one a couple of years ago, as an adult. I couldn't remember if I'd read it as a child or not, so I decided to give it a try. It was utterly charming. It's the sweet story of unassuming Mr. Popper and how he accidentally ends up with a set of performing penguins that make life grand.

Not long after I read Mr. Popper's Penguins, I heard a movie version was coming out starring Jim Carey. After seeing the trailer, I decided I'd pass on seeing it. So, if you saw the movie (or it's trailer) and were underwhelmed, you might try the book.
The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch
The Paper Bag Princess is one of my very favorite picture books. I loved it as a kid and I love it now. It was one of the first picture books I bought when I moved away from home.  It is the story of Elizabeth, a lovely princess who cleverly rescues her handsome prince, Ronald. The story ends with an intriguing twist, and is beautifully illustrated.

This happy little giveaway will have three winners. It is sponsored by Open Road Media, as part of their summer reading campaign, "Avoid the Summer Slide!" Check out their video -- it made me smile.

  1. I don't want to win any of the books (and I doubt that I qualify for the contest, being your husband and all). I do want to say that some of my favorite books from childhood are the Chronicles of Narnia. They're beautifully written and fun and imaginative.

  2. I loved all three of these books growing up too! But being your fellow blogger, I probably don't qualify either. :) Just adding my own two cents'--great books!

  3. Hi Alysa, I came across your blog via a Google+ search. I would love to win Strawberry Girl for my niece, who inspired me to start reading on the Kindle. I inherited my love of books from my mom and I'm happy to see my niece enjoy reading, too, albeit in a more "modern" format.

As a child, I remember reading the Boxcar Children by Gertrude Warner. I'll never forget how the orphan siblings were able start a new life while living inside an abandoned boxcar. The little adventurer in me loved the premise of that book.

  4. one of my favorite books as a child was the Little Bear series. Also Fanny's Dream. Do I have to pick?!

I would love to win the Paperbag Princess--it's such a lovely story!

  5. My favorite books from early childhood were the boxcar children. I thought the idea of living in an abandoned boxcar with beloved siblings eating only what you could forage was terribly romantic! I also remember feeling a great sense of escape as I read The Secret Garden. I holed up in my room and imagined myself in a beautiful world of secret growth. I also must mention From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. It might have been the first book that really made me FEEL something.

I'd like to win the Strawberry Girl!

  6. I'm a sucker for princesses, so I'd have to go with that one.

I remember reading Mr. Popper's Penguins in school and really liking it. It's one of those books where I keep getting fun mental images of penguins every time I think of the book:)

  7. The Girl Who Owned a City was the first book I remember loving and reading over and over and over again.

I have never read any of these books, so I would like any of them. But the Paperbag princess looks fun!

  8. Oh, I ADORE The Paper Bag Princess, but I already own that. :) I think I'd have to say Mr. Popper's Penguins. I remember loving it as a child, and would love to read it to my little boy.
