Meet the Author

If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would you want to meet?

I've been thinking about this recently because Shannon Hale (one of my most favorite authors) has a couple of books coming out this year. And since she does, I'm going to do my darnedest to bring her to a bookstore or library near me. I think it's one of my new year's resolutions.

If you didn't know, the way to bring an author near you is to talk to your local venue (library, bookstore, etc.) and get them to talk to the author's publisher. Writing the author him- or herself is probably not going to do much. Anyway, I'm pretty much planning a blitzkrieg. I'm thinking of asking about it at every one of my library trips (which happen more than weekly) and bookstore visits and maybe I could even get a petition going. . . . Yes, I can see it now. . . muahahaha!

Anyway, what author would you want to meet? Let's make a list!

  • Isaac Asimov
  • Niel Gaiman
  • Shannon Hale
  • Jane Austen
  • J.K Rowling
  • Edward Eager
  • Eleanor Estes
  • Tomie dePaola
  • Harper Lee
  • Nancy Farmer
  • Sherwood Smith
  • Garth Nix
  • Joss Whedon
  • C. S. Lewis
  • Melody Carlson
  • JRR Tolkien
  • Stephenie Meyer
  • Terry Pratchett
  • Diana Wynne Jones

  1. I think I would like to have met Isaac Asimov. He's dead now.

Neil Gaiman might be cool to meet. He's still alive.

  2. I heard Shannon Hale was out in Tooele Utah earlier this year. To bad I didn't know her stuff then.

I dont know who I'd want to meet. Good question though, gets me thinking. In 2 weeks I get to meet Nancy E. Turner(These is my Words). She's coming to my local library for a Symposium. I'm excited.

  3. I would love to meet Shannon Hale (I almost did last summer!), Jane Austen, J.K. Rowling, Edward Eager, Eleanor Estes, Tomie dePaola...the list goes on. But those are the main authors I'd love to meet. :D

  4. Oh, I know Shannon. She is really the sweetest thing on the planet. You could not find a happier, nicer, or more sincere person (and a fine good writer at that). Her signings are always a hoot. She dressed up in cowboy gear (along with her husband Dean, and Nathan Hale, their illustrator), did a reader's theater, and wore this amazing wig of yarn braided pigtails. It is worth every effort to get her out to you.

For me, besides Shannon, I would love to meet Harper Lee and Nancy Farmer, Sherwood Smith, and Garth Nix (but I met him already too. But I wouldn't mind it again). Oh, and Joss Whedon. I would die for that.

  5. Heather, I know Shannon too. :) Well, at least I like to flatter myself and say that I do. I've been to several of her signings, and miss them tragically now that I've moved further east.

I spoke to the man who books the events at my local independent bookstore today, though! And I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  6. OH! and also I meant to say I attended a keynote address given by Nancy Farmer once. Absolutely intriguing.

  7. Out of your authors listed? JKR, Shannon Hale, and Jane Austen.

But in addition to those authors I would also personally add C.S. Lewis and Melody Carlson to that list :) Maybe JRR Tolkien as well...

    Haha. So many authors. :D

Oh, but I have already met Shannon twice so that's nice. And Libba Bray once which is also nice :)

  8. I have met Shannon at several book signings and a writer's conference and feel like we are practically best friends, (all though she might perhaps feel differentl). =) Seriously, in person she is equal parts delightful and hilarious, just like her books.

I would like to go to lunch with Stephenie Meyer, because I think we would get along great. Getting a book signed by her at a Nazi-style book signing doesn't really count.

  9. Ooh, I'd like to go to lunch with Stephenie Meyer and Shannon Hale at the same time! They're great friends, I hear. Gosh, that would be fun!

Also, what? Nobody wants to meet any zombie authors?

  11. Gil said...Eleanor Estes was my mom's aunt. I met her once, in about 1969, at Riverside Cathedral in New York City as she had come to hear me sing with the Chattanooga Boys Choir. She was very sweet with sparkling eyes.
